Healthy Lunch Ideas

Making an interesting and nutritious packed lunch every day can be difficult! A healthy packed lunch should contain a balance of foods. Try to include something from each of the four main food groups:

  • Bread, rice, potatoes, pasta
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Meat, fish, eggs, beans
  • Milk and dairy foods

Remember to include a drink too!

Egg mayonnaise filled pitta bread
Carrot sticks
Small box of raisins
Fruit yoghurt
Carton of pure, unsweetened orange juice


The nursery can serve hot food which has been prepared at home, provided it is sent to the nursery in a flask which can keep it at a temperature of 63 degrees.  If the temperature falls below this temperature the nursery is unable to serve this food.  

Hot and Healthy Lunch Recipe 1

  1. Macaroni Cheese Pasta
  2. Boil pasta as directed, and drain. Set aside.
  3. Put into a microwaveable bowl – 1oz plain flour, 1oz butter and half a pint of milk
  4. Microwave on full power for a minute at a time, using a whisk to stir the mixture between each minute.  This can take about 8 minutes.  

    The sauce should thicken and should be smooth.
  5. Add grated cheese, and pepper to taste and pour sauce over pasta.  Sprinkle with more grated cheese.  Serve with crusty bread.
